Accident Summary:

AT APPROXIMATELY 1600 HOURS, 27 MAY 1970, WO1 STONE AND WO1 LAUGHLIN WERE ON A RESUPPLY MISSION FOR THE 2ND BDE, 4TH INF DIV WITH A UH-1H HELICOPTER, SERIAL NUMBER 68-16299. AIRCRAFT WAS OPERATING OUT OF A HELIPORT (SUPER BOWL) APPROXIMATELY 2 KILOMETERS SE OF GOLF COURSE TOWER (AN KHE, RVN). AIRCRAFT HAD 4 PASSENGERS (2 WITH COMBAT GEAR), APPROXIMATELY 450 POUNDS OF CARGO, AND 750 POUNDS OF FUEL. CREW HAD MADE SIXTEEN TAKE-OFFS FROM SAME LOCATION ON DAY OF ACCIDENT. AIRCRAFT MADE HOVER CHECK (35 LBS. AT 95% N1) AND WAS GIVEN CLEARANCE BY TOWER TO T/O SOUTH. AIRCRAFT COMMANDER ATTEMPTED TAKE-OFF AND INCREASED TORQUE TO 36 LBS AND 7% N1 AND WHEN HE SAW THAT HE COULD NOT MAKE IT OV– TELEPHONE CABLE AND POWER LINES HE DECIDED TO GO BENEATH WIRES, BECAUSE IT WAS TOO LATE TO ABORT. MAIN ROTOR CLEARED THE WIRE AND TAIL ROTOR HIT WIRE CAUSING 90 GEAR BOX AND TAIL ROTOR TO SEPARATE FROM AIRCRAFT. AIRCRAFT PITCHED UP IN THE AIR, 100-200 FEET, SPINNING RAPIDLY, AIRCRAFT COMMANDER ROLLED OFF THROTTLE, AIRCRAFT SETTLED AND AIRCRAFT COMMANDER PULLED PITCH TO LEVEL AND CUSHION. AIRCRAFT STARTED TO SPIN AGAIN AND HIT GROUND AND BOUNCED, ROLLING OVER ON LEFT SIDE. TAIL B//M AND MAIN ROTOR WAS SEPARATED FROM AIRCRAFT.
