Hey Alvis, are you or Susan gonna be at your house tomorrow (Sunday)around "noonish"? I carried a package home from Florida for Ron Paye. We'll be passing thru Avon going to Debbie's Dads and thought it would be easier for Ron to pick it up at your house rather than driving all the way to mine. Let me know........Gale

Hello from the UK. The video footage I took walking in behind Phil during Friday evenings surprise I am copying to Bill, who was videoing from the other side of the room. He in turn is going to let me have a copy of his footage. Once I have that then it will be used for another short video which I'm sure will end up on a wider platform, as to whether that is TV in the UK/US etc or youtube I'm not sure, a decision has yet to be made. Bill, I think, said he would be doing a reunion video which would include my footage. At the moment all I can say is watch this space and as soon as I/we know what is happening to the video we will let you know. Hope that answers your question. Always a brother Simon.

Hey, Gale. It was great meeting a post office brother amongst the 129th gang. No, everything is pretty much FUBAR, but what the hell...... Life goes on, I guess.. Just keep plugging away one day at a time. I'm so proud to have met all you guys. Maybe that was the whole point of the last year of my life, anyway. A chance to meet so many heroes in one room! I am ordering a book from Bill, as soon as he answers my e-mail about cost of book, plus shipping. Does anyone know what Simon (or rather the BBC?) plan on doing with the filming done while they were here? Is there going to be a follow-up on the telly in England? Youtube posting??

Good afternoon from the UK. We're glad everyone is back safely. We got back at 7.05am this morning (Wednesday) after flying out of Orlando last night at 6.15pm, so now trying to stay awake until later this evening. It was an excellent week and one that will go down in the annuls of time. To have managed to keep "our" little surprise as we did, made our first 129th/VHCMA re-union all the sweeter!! It was indeed a surprise you sprang on us, it must be rubbing off on you, with making us members of the 129th and I for one feel very privileged to have such an honour bestowed upon me. It was great to meet so many of you, as now you are no longer just a name on the flight log, faces now come to mind when reading the log entries. Bill, the book is excellent and well worth all the effort, it must have been very hard deciding what should go in and probably even harder deciding what not to include. Always a difficult call to make as an editor especially when you are so close to the subject matter. The end result is a superb record of the unit and will prove to be a valuable source of information and first hand accounts for many far beyond the 129th. I'm looking forward to sitting down and reading it properly. I'm sure when word gets around what 129th has done others will follow suit, realising just how important such a publication is. I gather some of the DVD's aren't playing on your machines, that is I suspect is because the players are a region specific machine rather than a multi regional one, so a European disc will not play on a US specific DVD player. However you might be lucky with your computers, if you struggle again it will be worth trying another media player other than the standard Windows Player and looking at Quick, Real One etc. If you don't succeed all is not lost as Bill has a copy on tape that he will be able to copy on to DVD that will play in your machines (sorry Bill just volunteered you for that one). Thank you for your hospitality and for making us feel so welcome. Look forward to meeting up again sometime. Always a brother... Simon and Nina.

Mom returned this letter to me during the Orlando Vist last week.I was a FNG. Letter From Home..time..3rd or last week, Aug.1971...History.. The Paris peace talks were continueing,I had just arrived in country a few weeks ago and was still in transent quarters...Location..Tuy Hoa, Vietnam...Dear Mom and Dad, Well,I am not in Cham Ron Bay anymore.I just shipped out to Tuy Oha (as spelled in letter).I will be here for three or four days then shipped somewhere else most likely. Anyway,I wont know till then. Please excuse the sloppy handwritting but I find some real odd places to write. The reason I wrote is to let you know not to worry if you dont hear from me for a week or so.It sure getstireing living out of a duffle bag.it sure is nice here,we have "flushing toilets",hot water and airconditioning. Its almost like state side.I even got to take two showers today! I sure am glad i am out of Cham Ron bay now.I sure did hate that place. When i get to my unit,I get paid! How about that. People around here say that a lot of people will be going home by Dec,31st. but i think that i will be here for a full year because of my MOS. Who knows? Well, its about time to hit the sack. Love,Fred.

On the way back home,Susan and I wandered a lazy path back thru Georgia. We stopped and roadside farmers markets and bought some "fresh from the fields" peaches, watermelons and tomatoes,to bring back home to share with some friends. Anyway, I wanted to go onto Fort Benning for a look around. After visting my Dads grave,we went towards the jump towers.Stopped for a minute and watched all the airborne recruits run anywhere and everywhere they went. Went by ifle firing ranges and watched them a bit, then wandered down to Lawson Army airfield for a look around. (took a few pics).

ok, squirmed out going to work this evening. To much left to do here. I would like to touch on a few things to get all up to speed. Great job done on the book. Between the covers, lies 327 pages of great pictures, facts, storys, history and fun. Each one of our KIA's has his own story as well. Some sad reading there. A CD is also included,on the inside back cover. Lots of new faces, missed a few old ones.Great kids and wives(and grandkids).Great job Alex, you did well. The entertainment portion was hampered by a poor sound system, and that was the hotels fault. A great meal was served with very ample serving. The 129th room,as usual, served as the socal center and heart of the reunion for us.Lots of pictures and personal albums lay scattered about, from many years.Bill Wolff (congrats Bill) and Alex showed the complete and rescripted film from the trip 3 of us took over to the UK.When that ended,Ron stood to speak and in walks Phil and Simon.I think all of Orlando heard the cheers, the clapping and the blowing of, suddenly, runny noses. The "dinner dance" tickets must be purchased in advance. There are only 300 tickets. When they are gone, thats it! Phil,Jo,Simon,Nina, didnt have tickets. I dont know how it was done, but 4 tickets were found and given to our guest. Matt Casey also found himself without tickets..and again, a ticket was found. These thing were as scarce as hens teeth,,job well done guys (and Ladies). ATTENTION FLIGHT. Everyone present whispered and schemed, then approved a motion, to make Mark Jackson, Phil Connolly, and Simon Johnson official honorary members of the 129th AHC. Yes,yes, yes, its been understood, but we decided to have it put on paper. In the time we had,we guys were clueless...then the women got involved. Kat (Bills wife) got involved in the leg work, and the deed was done. In a ceromony the next evening,it was made official.A motion was then made, and approved, that the honorary word be stricken, and to be made full,100%,members. There were no nays. We now have 3 new members of our unit.Gently will also be so honored,(there wasnt enough frames)at our next reunion. We felt bad about this, but what can you do? Gently will have her own special ceromony, she is special to us in her own Judth way. So,we have 4 new members, our first lady.We couldnt think of a better way to say "thank you" for all she has done for us. Its all we have to give.Thank you, four, great people. I was kinda scarce this year.Susan and I tried to fit a family reunion(60 miles away),and unit reunion, and playing tourest, all in those few days.

We're safely home also. It's so difficult to leave all of you after spending several days with you. Just waling out of our 129 room on Saturday night broke my heart. You are such a wonderful group of people. Smitty, I never did find your patch, sorry. Someone picked it up in error..I'm sure they'll contact us when they realize it. To Bill Wolf and Bill Whelen....nice job you guys! The book is beautiful and very meaningful. Rick England took home a helmut from Nam(donated and painted by our own Frenchie) and a rotor tail blade....he always does well in the raffles! More wives were there this year...always a joy! And to all the 129 first timers--aren't you glad you came! I'll see some of you in Kokom(Kal)...the rest of you I'll see next year but I'll be thinking about you every day. Alex and Liz....thank you both for doing all you have for the 129th, we are blessed to have you. You are both so thoughtful and caring. Bill and Cat....you have big shoes to fill. I'm looking forward to what you are going to do for our helicopter guys:>)) starting with a change in the banquet program:>)))next year...I hope. Miss you all-Gently

Well, another GREAT VHCMA reunion under the belt!!.. Sure was great seeing all of you again!!. 2405 miles down the road now. Took a while but am safely home and looking foreward to next year. From the posts, it looks like everyone enjoyed themselves as much as I did. It was really great to see and meet Phil, Simon and their wives, and that really made this one stand out. I only ran into a few holdups on the road and a couple of them were major looking, Buss mangled and on its side and a bigtime detour with 3 semis all crunched up and burning. So, I consider myself lucky as having made it with nothing more than a bit of a delay here and there. Thanks again to out new President, Bill Wolf, for the GREAT BOOK, and I would recomend to all that it is really something you need, and well worth the money. It also was great meeting the new attendees this year and hope they all will be with us in future years, it is always good to be able to put a face with the posts too. Well, enough for now.. Thought you could pass on the info to the guys at the reunion. Sorry I couldn't make the reunion this year, but it has something to do with the Silver Rose. Hello Flight! What can I say about my experience at the Reunion last night, the answer is "WOW". Although brief, it is something I shall not soon forget. Along with having the ability to match faces to names and talk with people from my past, there was having the opportunity to thank Mark for bringing us all together, topped by meeting Phil and Simon. Discussing the "509" with Phil was a great highlite as I know but have no written proof, that I flew on that bird. Ron Paye and I talked awhile, saw Larry Lackey. All I can say is now I am hooked and will now try to never miss another Reunion. Hope all make it home safely, as I must now point the Semi towards Atlanta and get the groceries to the store. P.S. the book has not left my side since last night

CSM Charlie Rains. I have never met a nicer bloke. Charlie made me more welcome in USA than the President so to speak. My heart is out to all his next of kin and Vietnam Bretheren. Charlie will be a great loss to all of us on this planet and the man who takes his place will have big shoes to replace Charlie's. My best wishes to all and they who venture forth to Orando for the VHCMA 07 Reunion please have a beer for me and one for Charlie. Give Tom frankenfiels a beer too. He deserves it. I would love to have you all's English teacher see your writing and spelling cause you'd all have one ear longer than the other from her jerking it!! You make it hard to read the flight log for long--see if you can't do better. And check email rules about being too lazy to capitalize beginning of sentences or typing in all caps! Do you know what all caps says about you???? Larry

Reading Ken's post reminded me that I was once doing some volunteer work at a free clinic and we tracked STD tests with social security numbers. Well one came back positive and when we crossed referenced we had 7 hits with the same number and all but one turned out to be addresses at vacant lots. Imagine the suprise of the real american citizen when we contacted her. Funny thing she was not the patient.

Flight, speaking of the 129th patch........if you're driving, make a copy of the patch and stick in the back window. It shows up pretty good. Ask Mark, after he lost his bike in Mo. and rented a car, he passed me in northern Az when we were going to LZ Phoenix. Of course, I still got there well before him....hhehheehhehehh, right Mark? Then on the way home a guy stopped me in St Louis after he recognized the patch.

Anyone leaving early for LZ Orlando be careful out there and have a safe trip. We'll be leaving early Tuesday and driving down thru 'Bama. Gonna try to buy some pecans around Dothan. I'll be in a green Camry with a 129th patch in the back window, so, anyone traveling that route keep an eye out. Will be at the hotel 'bout noon on Wednesday. IRS......Shit...I`m on a "first name" relationship with them......They address my letters from them as "Dear Fred" not Mr. Skaggs......I`ve always done "side-jobs" and would try to cheat a little bit. I`m not a good gangster....they would "bust" me. I ended up having to pay-back taxes of $11,000 and some chump change........IRS is the most powereful arm of the government.....They`re better than the FBI or Secret Service......or CIA for that matter. IRS can shut your life down....they can freeze everything.

Alvis & Arthur sorry about the luck but I have been there too. Arthur if that is about the IRS make them tell you what, when and why you owe those taxes. You might find out you were working in a Taco Bell in two different states at the same time and that your younger, shorter with brown skin and eyes. I love this country but we sure is stupid sometimes letting people get away with all that they do. We have changed checking account numbers a couple of times because somebody in the Canmon Islands or somewhere cashed a check with our name on it. For those that know it is a pain fixing anything and is why I don't ever want a credit card, wait my credit is that bad too. FLIGHT HAVE A GOOD DAY.

Flight: Yesterday June 14th 2007 Command Sgt. Major Charlie Rains was laid to rest at the West Tenn. Veterans Cemetery with full military Honors. It was honor to be able to call him a friend and a Brother. As Executive Director for 13 years of The Vietnam Crew Members Association. Charlie always put the well being of the Membership first. Charlie was always there 24/7 for any member who needed someone to talk to. Or help with any kind of military forms or VA problems. Even in San Antonio his fight with cancer didn't slow him down. He gave it a 150% dedication to each and every member and thier famlies. I met a Doctor at the funeral. He told me how Charlie had contacted him Alabama because a Vietnam Vet there was having problems getting into the VA. He told me that Charlie guided him through all paper work and got this Vietnam Veteran the help he needed. Thats the Charlie Rains we all knew and Loved. A final slow hand salute to the Comand Sgt. Major and Our Brother!! Always A Brother!!

Taken from the cav... fiddlers green... Half way down the trail to hell in a shady medow green Are the souls of all dead of troopers camped, Near a good old-time canteen. And this eternal resting place is known as Fiddlers green. Marching past, straight through to hell the infrantry are seen, accompanied by the Engineers, Artillary and Marines. But none but the shades of cavalrymen dismount at fiddlers green. Though some go curving down the trail to seek a warmer scene. No trooper ever gets to hell Ere he's emptied his canteen. And so rides back to drink again with friends at Fiddlers green. And so when man and horse go down beneath a saber keen, or in a roaring charge of firce melee you stop a bullet clean and the hostiles come to get your scalp, empty your canteen, and put the pistol to your head, and go to fiddlers green. author unknown

If those of you that were there in San Antonio remember,Susan couldnt walk(without alot of pain) due to severe reactions to the chemo drugs. It was thru Charlie's efforts, that a wheel chair was found for Susan.Charlie did alot of that sort of thing..very low key but meant alot to a few folks..he did his darndest for the "little guy" as well as for the "org.".I believe thats whats called an "unsung" hero. thanks charlie.

Well, time to hit the road again! Am shoving off tomorrow morning for Oaklahoma City for a wedding and to Orlando after that! I'm mailing out about 25 books today. For those that reserved copies but wanted them to be brought to the reunion, I have them boxed. I'm also bring about 40 additional copies. If you can't make the reunion, but want copies, send me an email with your address and the number you want (they are $30 per book which includes shipping). I'll get those out on June 28th after I get back. I still have about 180 books available - so lets get them sold so we have a nice Christmas Fund available this year (and so I don't have a garage full of books!!!). You can see the book and info at: http://www.wolfcms.com/book.html. I think they are a great keepsake for family and friends. See you in Orlando. Clear left! Bill

A Slow Hand Salute!! To A Vietnam Brother and Friend Command Sargeant Major Charlie Rains. I have spent time with Charlie over the past few weeks. Charlie will be missed by everyone whom met him. His was dedicated to to the VHCMA and to the men and thier families. Charlie was the one whom put me the right direction to find the 129th. And, the person he had me contact was Mark Jackson. Charlie told me that with Mark by my side we could find many Brothers of the 129th. I look back to 1997 and now and Charlie was right. Look how we grown. Charlie made these reunions a family orientated event. With the purpose to reunite Brothers whom fought together in Vietnam. And to remember those Brothers Whom Gave It All!! Charlie Rains has touched a lot of lives. He was there 24/7 for vetearns whom needed help or to have someone to talk to. Rest In peace my brother until we met again at the Fidlier's Green. Charlie was a tall fellow, slim and with a gravely voice...due, I suppose, from the throat cancer treatments. I didn't know Charlie but my I am always saddened by the loss of one of our Comrades. Best wishes to his family, our prayers will be for them that they might have peace. The data I've seen shows that the Vietnam Veterans are dying at a much earlier age then any other group of Veterans. But I'll bet you all don't need data to know that. We just have to look at our friends that have terminal cancers and various other illnesses. I know many of you, as I am, are struggling with medical issues. God Bless you all. Am sitting in the airport in Phoenix on way home after another week on the road (4th week in a row)! I'll get all the books on order out on Monday (sent out about 40 before I left last Tuesday). And I'll be bring a big supply to the reunion. If you're going to the reunion, start exercising those writing hands as there are a TON of books to be signed!!!!! If want books at the reunion, you can either write me a check there or cash or just send a check when you get back home. I think after you see the book, you may want more than one!! Gently, I have a batch of checks to send to you for the 129th. I'll get that out on Monday with a note. Am really looking forward to seeing you all in Orlando!! Bill Wolf

Recieved a call from Simon tonight. Was good to hear from him. Simon and Phil both would like a 129th book, signed by everyone at the reunion. preferably, by their picture. Not only would this mean something to the 509, but to them personaly as well.I know that Mark,Ron and myself, feel like they are 129th family, heck, they have been comming in here for 2 years. Simon stated the welcome mat is out for ANY 129th person. He also said they would love to have some of us at an airshow over there. From personal experience, they will treat you as a part of their family.I triedto talk them into comming over for the reunion, but they have airshows to attend, with 509.Simoin said, well, maybe next year.Bill Wolf,Alex,we need to make sure their books get signed. Susan and I will be leaving Monday night for a relaxed drive down to orlando. see you there.

Joe and I are very excited about seeing all of you in Orlando! We'll be in on Thursday afternoon. The first person I'm going to look for is Gale Beard....he seems to think I owe him some beers, so I want to get that taken care of(ya, right). Bruno and Bernie.....are you 2 going? It would be wonderful to have you there with us. And Sticks!! And Ron Paye...oh oh! Alex, please tell Charlie that he is in our prayers, as are all of you struggling with war related illnesses. Joe turned 60 on Tuesday... how did we all grow up so fast? I talked to Ray last night...he and Gale are going to Orlando...amen. All of his medical care will be tended to when he returns. New names on the site...very cool, and welcome. Bill, will you be taking a semi to Orlando to carry all of those books in? I tried to get one on line but you don't take credit cards...got another suggestion? Should I just pay you in Orlando or wait to get a book after that? Which ever is easier for you. Love to all-everyday. Gently

Smitty, my uncle (dad's brother) served with the 24th Inf Div ,in the pacific. He did three islands; New Geuneia(spelling),Biak & Leyte - he was in the 3rd wave. He was wounded by shrapnel from a grenade. All this before his 20th birthday. Like wour dad, he said that there were about 100 men left in his company when he was wounded.

Good afternoon from the UK. If you missed the piece about Mark, Fred and Ron's visit to the UK that was shown on ABC on Sunday evening the 27th May and you've not yet seen it on their web site then hopefully in the next few hours you will be able to see it on youtube. As before just search for huey 509 and now four videos will appear. Apparently World News Sunday has extremely good viewing figures and so it should have brought you guys to the fore. 509 goes to the Cosford airshow this sunday. The forecast is looking good so she will be beating the air in to submission and wooing the crowd, no doubt with a little egging on and help from the 35 on the doors. I can see your you're all entering your final countdown to the Florida re-union, from all of us here in the UK have a good one!! Bye for now.

After one or two emails..this is the meat of the exchange. It doesnt say much for a KIA. I must remember that their memories are vastly different from the circumstances of my memories and what the friendship was/where based upon....."Thanks for the pics. Think I will look for that patch at some meets so I can hang it and the pic of Tom on his bunk over my desk. The last pic I have is so badly worn you cant tell who it is. Tom's parents used to live in Traverse city I don't think they are around any longer they were not in the best of health back then but I really have no idea. Tom's son Tommy Jr. looked just like Tom the last time I seen him, it has been a few years. He used to ask about his dad and we told him all we could about the type of man Tom was and many of the good times we all had. I ran into Jeanie (Tom's wife) about a year and a half ago. I stopped at a little party store in Madison Heights and she was working there but I haven't seen her there since. She was talking about moving. Tom is in Roselawn cemetery on 12 mile and Woodward in Royal Oak. anything else;se I can do don't hesitate to ask you can call or write".

Hey Flight, I'm on the road again starting tomorrow for a week, then back here for 2 days, then off for a wedding in oaklahoma and then to the reunion. I mailed out about 40 books today. I'll get all the others I have requests for next Sun/Mon. And I'll bring a supply to the reunion. Guys and ladies, this book is a real tribute to the 129th. It is 8 1/2 x 11 inches in size, 324 pages with a fantastic laminated cover featuring the painting "God's Own Lunatics" by Joe Kline (with his kind permission)and a photo CD with over 500 pictures. I bought books for my family including sons. I still have about 209 books available. So, get your requests in now before we run out!! Plus, the more we sell, the more money for the Christmas Fund!!! See you al in Orlando! Bill Wolf
