Hey Wink, or anyone that was in the guns 69/70 did you know a guy named George Bessette that was in the guns when you were there? He was from Somerset Mass. I was looking through my March/April's Veteran's magazine. It was in the locator section. He was looking for guys that were in the guns from 69/70. There was a phone # so I called and asked him if he had a computer, and he doesn't. Says he's not puter literate. Anyway, thought I would post this. I have his phone # if anyone wsnts to contact him.

BOOK UPDATE: The manuscript is in the mail on its way to Bill Whelan for printing! Once Bill is able to give me the cost of printing I'll be able to figure out the final cost for a book and will post that here and on the mini-webpage I created for the book: http://www.wolfcms.com/book.html. I'm going to have Bill print 300 copies. Originally I was going to only have 200 printed, but I think there will be enough requests for 300. I'll keep you all updated! Bill Wolf

Hi flight. I just booked a flight to Orlando round trip for $113.30 leaving Kinston on Allegiant air 22nd and returning on 25th. I can share my room with someone. The ones who live in Easten N.C. could take this flight and save some money.

Well, I was replacing a leaky valve cover gasket on my bike, and when I checked the valves, (like a good Mechanic) I found I was unable to get the minimum feeler gauge of .08 in the gap between the valve top and the cam. Matter of fact I couldn't get .038mm under it. So I figure the valve hasn't even been opening for I don't know how long. All others seem fine. So I decide to take the Camshaft off and order a new thinner shim for the valve. I have a 2000 Kawasaki 750 ZR7 with an in line 4 cylinder engine, so I take all of the holding brackets to the front camshaft off and the camshaft chain gets so tight I couldn't move the camshaft at all. I read ahead a page or two in my service manual and find that I have a non return type of chain tensioner. Which means that the push rod doesn't return to it's original position once it moves out to take up the camshaft chain slack. So now I have to remove the camshaft chain tensioner, and then I can remove the camshaft and get the valve shim out so I can measure it and order a new slimmer shim so the valve will open. Then I can put it all back together. At least I know the work is done right and it doesn't cost more than $10.00 and some help from a friend. Oh, and lots of beers. Hope all is well with everyone....Rob

No Cover, good booze, and good music, plenty of parking in Boardwalk hotel parking lot, and best of all no crowd. What better place to hone drinking and dance skills prior to Saturday night. BTW, my reservation has been made at the hotel for Saturday and my wife Connie will be with me. I had planned on taking the week off but with the sudden job change plans had to change. good morning flight. with regrets for disappointing all,i am going to cancell my party on friday the 22nd.my main reason for doing so is the traveling time from the hotel to my home. its an hour an 15 minute ride. to some that may not be long but with the extra traffic created from vacationeers. iknow it would be to much. also with the drinking during the party i dont want anyone to get in trouble on thier way back to the hotel, if youy know what i mean. ive looked into a charter bus an the cost is to much. as much as i would love to have you all here i must decline on my offer to have this gathering, with deep regrets.i hope all who have accepted an all who where thinking of doing so will understand why i have cancelled. wink 3/69-10/70

HI all... I'm just getting caught up from being in sunny Florida. Spring training: college ball, Red Sox, twins......aahhhhhh spring!!! My take on fred3's outburst is this. The one thing any of us have in common is that we were in the same unit at one time or another. We come from all different walks of life, different backgrounds, political persuasions, geographical areas. To me, it makes no difference if one is a U.S. senator or a convicted axe murderer, ( maybe we can trust what the murderer says?) we have the one thing in common, the 129th. I don't think anyone who posts here is doing so in hopes of attaining sainthood. I'd wager that most of us, (Judith excepted),at some point have stayed too long when we should have left, left when we should have stayed, screamed epithets when we should have begged. To me, it makes no difference. In here, we're members of the 129th. Nothing can change that!

Goodmorning Flight: Fred S. Always will be a Buckeye!!! And alot of us in the area of Memphis. Memphis played alot better than I thought they would. They are supposed to even a better team next year. Ohio breeds football and basketball. Could see a rerun next year. Bill good to see book is coming along. Fred III, all I would like to say this. Alot of vietnam vet's children are in the same situation as you. I am far from making excuses. 72 hours after leaving the battlefield. We were walking the streets of the USA. We had a hard time adjusting to civilian life. We were lookesd down on by our peers. Most of us eventually lost our wives and children. It's something we will always regret. As combat soldier we have tried to move forward and make some kind of life. And, believe me it's been hard. Here we can get support from our Brothers. You might think I am blowing hot air. But, my children were in the same position as you. And, it's been hard everytime I think about missing Birthdays, Christmas etc. Fred III I hope you never walk in our shoes. And, one day before you Dad passes on that you can be able to talk to one another. Were not looking for forgiveness but, understanding. My son attended the Atlanta reunion. 30 years since I seen him. But, after talking to the Vietnam vets at the reunion. He understood some of the problems I had and why his mom and I were divorced. At, least we are speaking terms now. Well, Flight will see you all in Orlando. always A brother!!

BOOK UPDATE: Please keep in mind that March 31st is the absolute deadline for any last submissions. After that date I will be finalizing the manuscript and sending it off to Bill Whelan for printing. I think I'm going to have 300 printed instead of 200 because of the feedback I've been getting. I'm sorry I don't have a price yet, but will let everyone know as soon as Bill and I know. to sum it all up, little was known about PTSD if anything, 40 yrs ago.PTSD was called a number of things an generally egnored by the powers to be.today because of few dedicated, {sorry about the spelling} doctors, we now know the causeof our problems through out life.it's easy to say and look back on our lives an say , so that has been whats been my problem all this time.but at the time,40 yrs. ago, nothing was known about PTSD, an too live with this was frustrating, to say the list.i for one have made alot of mistakes in my life an hurt a lot of people an regret it all an i can only hope that the ones i hurt can have the understanding to forgive me.an lose who can not forgive i pray that they can forget, as in your case fred III FOR IF YOU CANNOT IT WILL EAT YOU UP INSIDE YOU AS IT IS DOING KNOW.AND IN TIME YOU MIGHT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES IN LIFE THAT YOUR FATHER HAS MADE. LEARN FROM HIS MISTAKES. I KNOW THIS TO BE TRUE BECAUSE MY TWO SONS AN DAUGHTERS HAVE AN ARE STILL LEARNING FROM THE MISTAKES I HAVE MADE IN MY LIFE TIM, AN THEY ARE BETTER FOR IT.FREDIII, I ONLY HOPE ONE YOU CAN FORGIVE YOUR DAD ONE DAY. Than I made mistakes with my sons & ex wife too. It wasn't till I started going to PTSD groups that I could see myself and the rest of us as a whole. To the son, I wish you would take time and try to understand your father. As the purpose of the site is to help heal and understand what we went through. Our children probably need to read this to understand ourselves plus themselves. My sons had it hard but I feel are better for it.

Fred, I hurt for you man, i wish there were something i could do to help, I went through some of what you went through with you & as Bill said " they will never know". It is inappropriate to air that stuff here (Fred 3) & should be kept personal. This is a site for healing not hurting. >> Respects to all>>> Smitty (CE with Fred A).

Have been traveling the last week and just got a chance to visit the Log Book while waiting in yet another airport. I found Alvis III's postings interesting. I agree somewhat that this is not really the place for posting that - I"m sure an email to the appropriate person would have been sufficient. When I was "brought into the fold" by Mark and discovered this site it gave me a chance to reconnect with those who shared a one-year (or more) unique experience - combat. (War is Hell....but actual combat is a son-of-a-bitch). Like M from Texas, I grew up with out a father - he abandoned our family when I was two. I had all the emotions about that over the years, sadness, loneliness, anger. But I grew and matured and learned to store those in appropriate places. I feel blessed that any PTSD in me was extremely minimal - probably a good think cause I ended up as a cop for 27 years. It's funny to think back to when I was 30 - even forty. I thought i had experienced it all and knew it all. Imagine what we/I thought at 25!!!! A wise man said that "Its what you learn after you know it all that makes you wise." Good words. Fred is a good friend, a fellow comrade who served his country when they didn't want to serve him. I honor him for that. I wouldn't presume to give Fred III any advice other than what I've shared. This site is truly a blessing (thank you Mark!) and I hope we all continue to post here and stay connected here. Few people today understand just what we did in that far away place and what we endured. God bless you all!!! Bill

It saddens me to see this stuff here. This site isn't about that. I grew up without a father. He served in the Navy during Vietnam in AU. The last time I heard from him was about 11 or so years ago. He is mentally insane with more than one ailment. Including paranoid schizophrenia. He has done allot to my family, esp. my older brother. My parents divorced before I was born. I have plenty to be angry with him over. I could easily hate him and be as bitter as you are but I'm not. I couldn't even begin to understand both sides. My mother has never taught me to hate him like some parents often do. I also have seen what PTSD can do to people. I watched my uncle try to kill himself in many different ways. His choice was drugs and alcohol. It killed him eventually. He could never be without a radio or tv on, up until the days before his death...His dreams and flashbacks were to horrible to live with without noise to try and cover them up. My grandpa is a recovering alcoholic. PTSD eats away at a person from the inside. When Vietnam vets came home they were treated like crap and given no kind of mental health attention. They were pretty much told to suck it up and be a man. They dealt with it as they could and can. You may have a right to be angry but I doubt you are perfect either. I hope some day you can get over your bitterness because it hurts you more than anyone else.

His anger is justified, but this is the wrong place and he knows it.

Brothers and sisters I have lost my connection to e-mail. If someone can do it I can. hehehehehe. I believe this is the only group we have an our family needs to talk this out I wish my son and daughter would come on here and say what they feel. I am not sticking up for anybody. Sometimes I feel things need to be said. for one reason or another. We are diffrent and do things nobody else says or does in front of others. This is what we have. All of my friends are brothers of combat or vetreans. My kids and wife do not hold back on me if they have something to say even if it hurts. This is another step in my disorder. Just like in dances with wolves "That is all I have to say" Be careful out there

I wasn't going to post any further comments here but I wanted to respond to Animal. I don't know you or your family but I have geniune respect for what you are saying. I don't want to say this as if it applies to your situation, but personally I have often thought to myself that if I could change the way things played out, I would NOT. Precisely because in the end I benefited by being raised by a caring and wonderful mother and was shielded from whatever it is that has driven my father down the path he has travelled. It was perhaps very fortunate for me. You seem to deeply care, so I apologize to you if I have struck a nerve. I sincerely wish you and your family the best of luck......... To those who wonder "why" or asked "what do you want from us" - maybe I wanted to give something, not take. I wanted to give you a very different perspective. Maybe I just want to call some of the bull and I want to point out to those who so quickly and easily say "hindsight is 20/20" that the benefit of 20/20 hindsight is that it allows us to make different choices going forward. If a person is unwilling to do that, then it is a cop-out to excuse it that way. I know that my words will have meaning to some who read here because I have seen veterans posting similar sentiments - sometimes very angrily. Maybe it will even make someone out there rethink things in a way that helps them. (this will be my final post)

Fred III, I am not going to sit here and try to make a Saint out of your father nor am I going to try to make a devil out of him, nor the same thing out of you. all I have to say on the matter is: walk a mile in his shoes (spend your time in combat) take in all the good that comes out of it and weigh it against the bad that comes out of it. see how you handle it. I pray you do a better job at it than some of us in here have done. but remember we ALL handle our DEMONS in the best way we can. and we ALL handle them differently. so if you go, I hope you come home in one piece so the ghosts that haunt you upon your return don't have help reminding you of what you have been thru by you having to strap on an artificial limb every morning before you start the daily fight to remain somewhat sane. Fred III, This thread you've opened up has been one of the most thought provoking and relevent topics we've ever discussed on this site. "How are the offspring of war veterans affected?" You've suffered abandonment. Others have suffered the opposite, having to live with the alcoholism, drug abuse, neglect, violence and other symptoms associated with PTSD. I am presently trying to undue the damage to my own children; Not from being apart from me, but from being exposed to my behaviors. People with PTSD are typically not only carriers, but providers to those closest to them. I have often wondered if my kids would have been better off without my influence. Now that I'm in treatment, I'm glad I've managed to hold it together and stick around. There's a long and bumpy way to go, but I feel that at least my family and I are moving in the right direction. A person doesn't feel the benefits of forgiveness until after it's been given, and one day of forgiveness is worth thirty years of waiting for a disease/sickness/syndrome to go away. You and your brother seem to be doing OK despite hard circumstances, and I respect you for it. As far as the body armor issue; hey, I voted for Nader, if it wasn't for him our guys would probably be driving Corvairs over there.(LOL) Best wishes to father and sons, Greg

Dave Powers, yea I was the only grand-child on both sides of my family that was in the Armed Forces....all my male cousins went to college or was too young. So I had 14 Aunts and Uncles and My Mother and her friends sending me stuff.....I use to give away alot goodies....like sweets. They packed that stuff tight, so rarely did I have problems of stuff getting smashed.....Plus my mom`s cook at the bar, Big Betty, both her sons had been in Nam in the 60`s. So she knew how to send stuff, without it getting smashed.

I`m from a single parent family also, so I uderstand some of your feelings......I know your posting is gonna make you feel better......but it`s not going to change things. It is what it is and you have moved on and become a better person because of your experiences. My advice is to keep on moving forward with your life and never live in the past. You got your undergrad, keep going and get your Masters and PHD. Fred III, I`m not a "role model" myself, I never had any off-spring.....because I was selfish in some ways and made alot of self-centered choices in life......You`re still a young man, and you will learn......Life isn`t always fair.

Paul, I don't want to make a habit of responding to every post here and I'm sure you would like what I have said to go away as soon as possible. Its three in the morning here so this will be my last one. "Hindsight is 20/20" is a pretty crappy whitewash treatment to decisions that have been made in the last 24 hours but are being excused by third parties as if they happened the full 30 years ago. Guess what, if he wanted to, he could suck it up and act like a man right now. He wont. That is called foresight not hindsight. Ask him if he'll contribute to some armor for my brother (who has never posted on this site or said a discouraging word against him). You won't do that - again its called foresight

Gale, You have missed a vital element to my analysis. I'm not merely listing skeletons from the closet or airing dirty laundry. Much of what I have witnessed is in the present - I simply wasn't there to judge the past. Measure things the way you want to, thats up to you. You are not his son and likewise, I am not his perfect stranger posting from a website with the sole mission of excusing his every deed. Everything I have mentioned in my post regards my own measurements. If you won't be divided, that is no loss to me as it is not my goal. Although I am quite certain that your opinion of him is of far greater importance to him than mine, it is not my concern. I might say that you missed something far more relevent beyond that - there is more to life beyond your standing in the 129th ahc. Whether you stand united with him has no relevence to me but I'm sorry that you couldn't take anything meaningful from what I tried to say. Animal, I genuinely appreciate your thoughtful response. I can't agree with your implication that there is any regret or struggle for improvement when specifically applied to our circumstance. As an aside, I am not a stranger to dealing with tough psychological issues in which blame can not be simply rested upon a single person's shoulders. Later in life my mother was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Following an attempt to kill my brother and I, I lived in an orphanage separate from my family until the age of 17. Sporatically living on the streets, I met men and made friends of men who suffered from actually debilitating PTSD. You know, the kind of people who walk down the street ringing a bell and saying "the end is nigh". After reaching legal adulthood, I have cared for my mother and stood by her - staying awake until dawn more than once to protect her from what are called "accute psychotic episodes" in which the sufferer can not be dealt with in any rational manner. I have very personally felt the helplessness against mental illness that definitively derails a person's ability to function as a rational adult. In the end, to lump a series of choices over 30 years (and a continued unwillingness to make better choices) into a single convenient excuse for a man who is married, successfully holds a job, and has little trouble managing the aspects of his life that he cares about is not only distasteful, but down right disrespectful. It is a mockery to those I have known and cared about who really could not by their own will function in spite of an affliction.

Fred III, You certainly have your father's gift of prose. I can't speak for Fred, but I can certainly verify some of your statements. I both flew with your dad, and flew a different ship on the same missions with him. No matter what the circumstance of his enlistment, or his separation, he served his country honorably in war. I can also verify (from his contributions here, and my own personal experience) that he has severe PTSD. Another of your statements that ring true is the fact that this site is a drug, (read:medication),for not only Fred, but many of us. We have all done things we regret. We are all struggling to become "normal" productive, citizens and family men. The important thing is that we continue to struggle to improve, and not give up, like so many of our brethren have. I'm hoping that Fred keeps working towards containing and funtioning with PTSD (I don't think there's a "cure".) I also sincerely hope that you don't give up, as forgiveness is it's own reward. Best wishes, Greg Henkel

I saw below that Fred Alvis posted a lovely message from the children of vietnam vets. I have a message too as the son of a vietnam veteran that has some special significance to this website. You see, a couple years ago, I entered my name into google to see what kind of information was floating around out there about me. What I had not considered is that I share my name with my father whom I had never met. Imagine my surprise when "129th.net" came up in the search results and there was a man posting there with my name who was sharing stories remarkably similar to my father's past. It was no coincidence; the man was my father. Through some extraordinary coincidence I had accidently stumbled upon a man who had been missing for my entire life. This was a curious thing to stumble into so unexpectedly. My father had abandonded my pregnant mother and their very young son 25 years ago. This was a man who had never bothered to contribute anything to his sons or his struggling abandonded wife. Neither money, nor fatherly advice, nor a simple phone call, nor even a post card. In fact, he had threatened my mother that he would kill her if she ever tried to find him. So you can understand my mixed emotions when discovering him. Should I make contact with him or just forget him as I had already easily done in his absence? Even though I could have done that, I also wanted some answers. Honestly, I also wanted to tell him how poorly I thought of him. I really wanted for him to have some good reason for doing what he had done. Most of all, I wanted to be able to have some semblance of respect for him. So now, several years later, I have learned more about him and his side of the story. I have sent him both angry letters and hopeful and positive letters. I have after these years finally learned a few of the things that only he can describe about his experiences and I have learned there are things he probably can not describe. He connects most of his life to vietnam, especially his mistakes. He speaks of demons battled from within. He speaks of PTSD. What do I think of this man now? Well, I can tell you that his son, my older brother was married this week. My father could not tell you that, he wouldn't know it. He couldn't tell you where the wedding was, or maybe even the bride's name. One of the men posting here once mentioned that you were an alumni of the University of Southern Colorado and asked him if it was the school his son was attending. In fact I and my brother are both graduates of USC(recently renamed CSU-P). The reason he never replied is because to this day, he does not know nor care. Furthermore, it was seriously distracting him from doing what he loves - bragging about his experience in vietnam. I can tell you that his son is now a 2nd Lt in the US army. He couldn't tell you that either because although he could have asked, he never had much interest in it. I told him about it, but he was very much more concerned with changing the subject to videos of himself on youtube. I have a half brother from another abandoned family who he can not possibly assist me in finding because he has no interest in them either. After 30 years, and armed with many excuses for past mistakes, would he now be willing to chip in for some armor to protect a son should he be going to Iraq? Not a dollar. **Not even a cent**. This is a son whose picture I believe is actually on 129th.net. He had "129 AHC" written on a bomb that was going to be dropped on Iraq while he was serving in the navy. My father was intensely interested in the glory bragging of having a son serving, but nothing beyond that. What I have found is that the man has not changed. If you subtract 30 years, even if you subtract vietnam as an excuse for his problems, you will have the same man remaining. Minus 30 years and some bragging rights, you would have a scared little boy. This is what you would find if you looked at the "man" my father is today. What I have learned is that to at least one man, this website is very significant. Its importance is paramount - it is his drug. A dope that he takes daily before tuning out the rest of the world. Even before this website he would love to brag to his friends about his experiences, but it was never this good. Never so good as to allow the man to envelop himself completely in his past glory. That is very important since his reminiscence is his only means of defining some importance to a life spent reminiscing. You don't have to know him very well to believe it. You can see from his picture that he hasn't stopped talking about vietnam long enough to get a shave and a haircut in over 30 years. His beard is literally older than I am! For a man who never wanted to serve in vietnam, who was given the choice between the army and jail (although now he has changed his story to being drafted), who served his time as quickly as he could and got out with less than an honorable discharge, reminding people that he served is his solitary goal in life. Bragging about his experiences in one breath while complaining of PTSD in the other is his only satisfaction. This website is very important to more than just him and I. Obviously, it has been tremendously valuable to many of you and created the opportunity to reunite a brotherhood. Unfortunately, for at least one man, it also feeds a sickness. A sickness as real as any life-consuming drug addiction. You have one life to live and you do as much as you can with it despite what is thrust upon you. Many men, vietnam veterans or not, including many of the people posting here have achieved great things in their lives above and beyond the incredible sacrifice of serving their country. In one case, another has chosen to make it his last and only significant deed. In the end, his life will be measured accordingly, no matter how fiercely he exaggerates the importance of his single notable accomplishment. This is my final analysis of a father who I have never met but given every opportunity of redemption to - a man who I will now forget as easily as I had before accidently finding him on this website. This is MY message as a child of a vietnam veteran.

Fred S. - The French influence certainly makes sense, for many things we saw over there... architecture, food, language. You must have had MANY care packages from home! I got one once from my mom packed with chocolate chip cookies... trouble is I had to eat them with a spoon after the care package had traveled 10,000 miles and the cookies were pulverized! I enjoyed Slim Jims and canned pudding.

Dave P. In Holland and Belgium and France, the egg on the hamburger is pretty common in your nicer restaurants....Quick Burger(European McDonalds) serve them normal. The egg and burger thing was the French influence of the Vietnamese people. One by-product of French missionary occupation in Vietnam was influence on Vietnamese meals and food. It would be common to see such items as asparagus, white potato and French bread on menus, especially in the south, where French influence was greatest. A typical breakfast would often consist of a baguette, yoghurt and orange juice, all typical French items.

Does anyone remember in '71 the Vietnamese girl who worked in the PX, who had a little "sixth" finger growing along side one of her pinkies? Who could forget the famous "Nam Burger" (fried egg on a burger patty)? One dollar, as I recall at the EM club. Served with the tradition warm Schlitz... hard to beat, unless it was a ham and limas with a Coke.

just heard form Simon. Flight, its going to be on ABC,here in this country. Here is the E-mail....I am sure he wont mind me sharing it.......Fred, I have some good news. I've just spoken to my contact at ABC in London and plans are afoot to re-edit the material we broadcast on Inside Out in February. At the moment it is planned to be transmitted either Saturday 24th or Sunday 25th of March. It will be on News Saturday/Sunday which is anchored by Dan Harris. I am sending to London a transcription of the interview with the three of you just in case they want a little more of the three of you talking. It will be re-written and re-voiced by their own correspondent Nick Watts. They also plan on sending over the script for the intro which will contain a reference to the fact that Phil is in 'dispute' with the CAA over the US Army markings and that you the vets are helping in the quest for the letter of dispensation. They have also asked if they can have the contact details for the three of you so that if they want to they could talk to you aswell. Also requested are photos of you and Ron in Vietnam, so with your permission I'll send them one or two that the both of you gave us. Fingers crossed this might be the push and gear change we have been waiting for. Hope you and the family are all well. Will try and catch up with you over the weekend.

ok guys,I am going to try, once again, for a ptsd rating. I am going to need stressor letters from anyone that remembers any of the following. (dennis?) when we almost went down west of Tuy Hoa,,remember you calling out the may-days.Anyone with me when we found the crashed civilian aircraft on top of Quin Hon mountian, the bodies ripped apart like rag dolls. The CA where the ROKs ran DOWN the hill, straight into the rotor blades of the pick up bird.We were flying C&C that day...the ship crashed and rolled the rest of the way down the hill.We flew out the ROK injured.Dont know who picked up the dead. Anyone with me when we had a CA (ROK) one day, then flew back in the next day with replacement troops..and we got stuck flying out a floor full of dead ROKs in body bags? This was all between july of 71 and dec of 71.Cant remember more, anyway,I have ask also in the 60th ahc site,i spent 7 months with them. Trouble is,that site is VERY rarely visted as we were only a unit for about 1 year and some change.Thanks,F.Alvis

Greetings All, Have just survived the setback of being with a company for 7 long years and then called in and told my position(Safety Director)had been eliminated. I was at my wits end, when you are our age where do you find another job. After about 2 months of no leads and the savings account about to dry out, I was ready to climb back into somebodys Semi and Drive crosscountry again. When suddenly on the day I was at my lowest, I got a call from a Company President who I had done some business with in the distant past. Long story short, within less than an hour We were in salary discussion with me as his new Driver Manager. Moving on, Barry don't you read your email?,I even tried to call you but no answer. Email, dpfirst50*hotmail*com or call me @602-4043 same area code as yours. I need to get some times from you as my time off is very limited and I need to discuss things with you, in regards to the Reunion. Dennis

Ken, get out and soak up some of that sunshine!! Sorry to hear 'bout your brother in law. Have you been to Danville VA? I've been going there for quite a few years. It's a nicer drive and they treat you better than Indy....at least that's my opinion. As a matter of fact,I need to make an appointment for April.

Hi Flight, Just wanted to let you all know I am still checking in on the log. Have had a lot of pain issues the past couple weeks but maybe seeing the snow melt is helping. I have another brother-in-law who went to the VA in Danville and found out he has Colon Cancer last week. Like we all have said, it is our turn as the old vets to carry on many things. I did manage to write Rep. Steve Buyer today about the 11 cent travel pay which has not changed in a long time while it is costing me an arm & leg to get to the Indy VA. Then can't find a place to park. Two other things, first I am still trying to get a sight closer in Kokomo as they said I have one on the East end. Second is Soc Sec is telling me it is still over a year to get a hearing. That may keep us from making the trip to Florida, but still want to make it to Ohio & Kokomo. Please all take care and prey for those of us who are sicker than most.

Two people were laid to rest yesterday, that should be of note,to us,the 129th ahc veterans. First was Billy Walkabout. He is the most decorated "Native American",Vietnam Veteran, period. He has a handfull of Silver Stars,Bronze Stars,Purple hearts, ect, earned while helping save his fellow unit members( lurps I think). They were being extracted by slicks, under heavy fire NVA, despite being wounded,he returned time and time again to pick up his fellows that were wounded and on the ground...he got back off the helicopter several times to do this.Secondly, the LAST WW1 Combat Veteran has died. The clock is ticking for us too guys.Mark has being trying to contact 129th members thru radio comericals,Alex has been trying thru drrect mail and old orders.Lets hope the American Legion picks up the ball and that ABC does as well,on the 509 story. REUNION in JUNE..its about 65 days away.

Alex, its the American legion.I too hope its included. Not only will it help the 509 but will hopefully be seen by guys in the 129th that dont know we are here. I am also hoping some friends I flew with from the 60th ahc (ghostriders) see it and somehow contact me. The fellows at the American legion headquarters told me that the Largest group of members are now the Nam Veterans.Anyway,it should help in that they will post this site in the article,if they do it. Lets not forget that Simon has beem talking to the ABC branch on London about the 509 "inside out" program. That too will lead awareness to this site as well as getting the 509 colors to remain.

We chatted a bit,he took my offering with a promise to view them this weekend.Keep your fingers crossed boys.If we can get the 509 in the American Legion Magazine, then perhaps we can convince some of our politicans that this just might be worth supporting in keeping the marking and 129th colors on the ship.

Gentlemen, CPT Matt from 4/160 here. It's been a while, but things are still moving forward, and the Bulldog name will stay with us. Once we become and official battalion in a few months, the names will be in stone. We've been all over the place lately and so have our priorities. I'll be changing out of command in mid June, so I'd like to do something "official" prior to or in conjunction with that. Once we're all back in CONUS, we can start that planning. I'll shoot Dan H. a copy of our latest emblem/insignia/patch design, so he'll be able to post it for everyone. Basically, it's a dagger with a bulldog superimposed over it, it has our "AIRBORNE" tab above it, and it has the Roman numerals I, II, IX on the hilt. T-shirts, hats, etc. are in the works. Keep the greasy side down. -- Matt

Jim, thanks for the info on Lt. Brague. I did do an initial search of the helicopters to see if I could find which one was being flown, but no luck. You indicate that the ship did NOT crash and that could be the reason for no ship info. The info that I have indicated that the ship DID crash. I want to make sure the book is accurate. If you were the maintenance person and oversaw that ship, you should be right about it crashing or not crashing. Please let me know before the end of the month of any firm info. Bill Wolf

Concerning the death of Lt. Brague; I was in the service platoon at the time of the incident. I think they were coming into an LZ when two rounds from automatic weapons came through the small side window just missing the seat and exited the top of Lt. Brague's helmet. He was killed instantly. Co-pilot was able to take over the controls while crew and passengers rendered aide to the Lt. The ship did not crash. Sgt Matherson and I took care of the helicopter after it returned. No one else was injured in the incident. I'll contact the crew chief and see if he would be willing to talk about it in more detail as to what the mission was and so on. Jim Hydinger '66-'67

I got used to firing my 60 while it hung from a strap, and I used that to keep myself from falling out. I remember one ASAP, when Mike McKinney forgot to pull the mail bags off the miniguns. We climbed out and pulled the bags off , and I almost got sucked out of the ship when the bag got caught in the slipstream! Walking the skids was fun, but I never had the courage to try tapping the chin bubble.... I flew a few times with Rick Stevenson as his gunner, and I can't remember him ever wearing a harness, In fact, I have a picture of him putting on his chicken plate, and he didn't even have a shirt on.

Yea Kim, I had a "monkey strap" and would move around pretty free. But not unbuckled!!!!, Of course when calling a "sling load", I`ve laid on the floor of the ship, a little tuff to do in the well. But that was around the AO "ash and trash" stuff, when you could still see Lane, while working. Of course if we were resupplying, the Koreans in the Sui Cau Valley, after a CA....We would call a load from the well. But working with the 4th Inf. or 173rd in Happy Valley, they helped out alot. If Jimmy, the translator, was with you, it made working with the Koreans easier......Working with Col. Book, of the MACV, 22nd ARVN, that always a adventure. Him and his "1 helicopter CA`s" and "let`s see if we can draw some fire" recons.

BOOK UPDATE: Wanted to update you all regarding the book. It's now up to 314 pages and I know there are still a few photos en route. The ABSOLUTE deadline to have any other stories or photos to me is March 30th. After that date I will put the final touches on the manuscript and get it off to Bill Whelan for printing. Fortunately for all of us, Bill owns a printing shop and is giving us a very good price!! This will be a professionally bound soft-cover book. It will also include a video CD with most of the book photos, music, and some video. I'm hoping that we will have the book ready for orders by the second week of May. I will also bring some to the VHCMA reunion. I want to thank every one who has submitted material and photos. I went through close to 1,000 photos and a great many made it into the book. The stories were awesome and I think will give the reader a more realistic insight to the "combat veteran". Anyways, hope that updates ya! I truly want to thank you for the privilage of doing this project. All the profits will be going to the 129th fund. Thanks gang! Bill Wolf

hmmm. wonder what a flight to capetown cost. While i was watching that,i thought about the old trick we used to play on the pilots. the one where we would unbuckle, swing around the upright, then go up and tap them on the shoulder. I was going to do that to Phil, but with the 50s mounted as they were,I couldnt squeeze thru between the gun handles and the upright.pity I couldnt.

Saw Mr Paye (ron) yesterday. He is now back on line,i believe.Says he will be at the reunion in june. Talked to Simon and Bradly today as well. They have set up more airshows for the 509. They will list them as the are confirmed.Bill Wolf and I are going to again start on getting a fed taxfree number for the 129th.I did do it state level, two years ago,but its time to go national. That reminds me,I need to get back with a friend on the hats/shirts,ect, for printing.I gave mine away to Bradly, Simons son,in England. If he is flying as gunner on the 509,he needed a 129th hat...chuckle. Nina, his wife,is now in possession of one of the " Pop a Top" t-shirts as well.Jo, Phil's wife , now owns a pair of flight pants (nomax) that i brought back home with me. As I am about 50 pounds heavier,no way could I fit in them.I think they were wore 3 times by me.Simon says he is putting together another CD,of the full interviews, ect. They had 3 camera rolling,2 doing different shots while one was on all the time. We're talking about 45 minutes instead of 9 1/2 minutes. If and when I get a copy,it will be shared with who ever wants one.

thats the great thing about VA. Most of the people work there do a great, but most times, thankless job. The system is screwed up. Now here comes the good part...aint no-one to point the finger at.They screw the vets and then screw them some more, and their isnt anyone to blame. Is this country great or what? They always say the money going into it has risen 10% ,or whatever, but never mention the case load had risen 15%. They decieve by omission.

Fred Skaggs

Aahhh Freddie......you know as well as I that the problem isn't so much the VA system as it is our political scumbags, whether it be boy georgie, or the gutless butt wipers in the congress. Fight a war on the cheap.... WE do that in the private sector. Everybody has to make do with less...less money, fewer workers, just accomplish whatever mission lies ahead. It's been well known for a while now that the VA is underfunded, and therefore unprepared to deal with the influx of wounded, physical and mental. All the improvements in body armor, first aid, and medical technology have led to a lower body count, at the expense of more wounded. BUTTTTTT...good ole politics has to be served, too. How much red ink can the economy stand? And we certainly don't want to piss off the major political contributors, they paid good money to get their tax breaks, and we ALLL KNOW that it takes money to win??? ( the next election, that is)...Besides, aren't the grunts used to living in pup tents, sand storms, hundred degree plus weather???? What's a little mold after all that?

NEED YOUR HELP GUYS! In the book I'm working on I have a photo that I had received that indicated that it was Mr. DeSantis. However, Mark seems to think it is Bill Hewitt, but sent me another photo he thinks is DeSantis. I put them on a web page. Please go take a look and let me know if you can positively identify or clear up who is who. Please don't guess - I dont want to mix up something this delicate. The site is: www.wolfcms.com/who.html Thanks.

Walter Reed Hospital, "The Jewel" military hospitals......I can understand that WE have other priorities goin on. But, why hasn't there been a resounding voice of complete "OUT RAGE OVER THIS". I`m tired of these phoney "Support the Troops" lying hypocrites, look how our vets and troops are being treated!!!!! This isn`t politics, it's just a PUBLIC RELATIONS issue, eventually the problem will just go away...That`s bullshit.. it`s total disrespect for the men and women who put their ass on the line for this country. Past, Present and the Future. Now I know that, Jeff S. and Jim(Smitty) W., you worked for the system, and it`s not a personal attack on you guys. There`s no doubt in my mind that you guys did the best you could.....you took more than a personal interest. Somebody needs to be court-martialed on this. That kind of treatment and environment (mice? mold?) speaks volumes as to what the "brass" thinks of those they are in charge of. I am beyond sick at the hypocrisy of the V.A. system.
